I long for the day when the police union returns to a policy of refraining from endorsement of politicians. The PPA’s political endorsements have never produced expected returns on investment. I suggest that the PPA redirect its political investment funds into a unique program of management education and training. The payoff, a simple dichotomy: The shared trust in the police officer/manager/executive that you (PPA) developed eliminates a need to visit trust on short-tem politicians, who— if history is ever a guide of the future— will inevitably pander to special interest, rather than “protect and serve.” It may take a few years, but the day when the PPA puts its own unique stamp on the best of prospective PPB supervisors, managers and executives, is the day when the politicians will once again respect, seek and consult the experts.
